2014-2015 Pacific University Writing Contest Award Winners Announced

Pacific University's English Literature Department has announced the winners of the university's 2014-2015 writing contest. Open to all undergraduate students, the contest consists of creative and critical writing in several categories, including works of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, literary scholarship and college writing. First prize writers in each category win a monetary prize and their works are published in PLUM, Pacific's Literature by Undergraduates Magazine. 

Pacific University's Writing Award was established in 2007 with a grant from the Office of the President, under the guidance of Phil Creighton, to acknowledge the quality of writing produced by creative writing and literature students in the university's College of Arts & Sciences.

Amy M. Young Award in Creative Writing
(Recognizes creative writing produced by emerging writers at Pacific University)

Fiction
1st Prize: $200. Kayla Cardeiro: "Wings"

2nd Prize: Ashley Grogan: "How to Be a White, Christian Girl"

Honorable Mention: Zachary Meskell: "A Round of Shots"

Creative Nonfiction
1st Place: $200. Sally Wies: "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted"

2nd Place: Katie Fairchild: "The Days Are Just Packed"

Honorable Mention: Simon Brooks: "A Good View"

Poetry
1st Place: $200. Gracie Kenny: "sixteen ways"

2nd Place: Zachary Meskell: "Grave Games"

Honorable Mention: Victoria Hampton: "Learning to Be"

 

Award in Literary Analysis
(Recognizes critical writing produced by emerging literary scholars at Pacific University)

1st Place: $200. Sally Wies: "Passionate Resistance: The Domestic Space Bildungsroman of Jane Eyre"

2nd Place: Shannon Konoske: "She Deserved It: An Analysis of Victim Blaming in Fairy Tales"

Honorable Mention: Kyle Southard: "In the Flesh: Live-Action Movie Adaptations of Fairy Tales"

 

Award in College Writing
(Bestowed for the quality of academic writing produced by Pacific students studying in First Year Seminar or English Writing 201, 202, or 203. This award recognizes the writing of students early in their education at Pacific)

1st Place: $200. Buddy Becerra: "Self-Made Man in a Man-Made System"

2nd Place: Megan Kleser: "Paws for Silence: How I Lost a Friend"

Honorable Mention: Shariah Williams: "Are Polar Bears Destined to Be Back Up Dancers?: Analysis of Captive Wild Animals in Zoo and Marine Parks"
