Dr. Leslie Devaud Awarded A $30,000 Grant from the Collins Medical Trust

The School of Pharmacy is excited to announce that Dr. Leslie Devaud has been awarded a grant from the Collins Medical Trust. The grant in the amount of $30,000 will support her research on the “establishment of a zebrafish colony at Pacific University to promote biomedical research in a vertebrate animal model system.”  Dr. Ashim Malhotra and Dr. Brendan Stamper are co-investigators on the proposal.

Zebrafish, a non-mammalian vertebrate animal model, were primarily used for developmental studies, however, their uses are varied and now include many different types of studies, from genetics to Alzheimer's disease. Initially, several School of Pharmacy researchers intend to use the zebrafish model for genetic, pathophysiological, toxicological and behavioral studies.

While excellence in teaching and providing programs that meet community needs is a priority, the university also recognizes the importance of quality scholarship and research. The intent of this proposal is to provide expanded research opportunities for faculty and students and will allow researchers to establish a zebrafish colony at the Hillsboro Campus. The facility will be available to any Pacific University researcher.
