Optometry Class of 2017 White Coat Ceremony

The Optometry Class of 2017 celebrated a milestone and rite of passage on Friday, May 1, when they participated in the White Coat Ceremony. This ceremony marks the transition from the didactic to the clinical portion of the professional program. The 91 members of the class, along with their families and guests, gathered at the Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center on a sunny morning to receive their pristine white coats. The keynote speaker was retiring Professor Emerita, Lee Ann Remington, OD ’84, who commended the class for their hard work and inspired them to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. The solemnity of the ceremony included the recitation of the Optometric Oath, where the students pledged commitment to their future patients, to their profession and to the community. Dr. Carole Timpone, Associate Dean for Clinical Programs, welcomed the class to their two year clinic experience. Concluding remarks were provided by the class co-presidents: Amanda Olsen and Lindsey Rosencrans.  A reception followed the ceremony where cameras flashed and families embraced.

We were happy to welcome legacy families at the ceremony as they celebrated with their children. Lydia Lem, OD '83, and Glenn Kato, OD '83, flew in from Hawaii to honor their daughter, Kellie. The Mannens, Dan, OD '80; and Laurel, OD '79; were pleased with the accomplishment of their daughter Megan. Cole Wilson was congratulated by his father, Van Wilson, OD '92.

Our thanks to Essilor for providing the white coats and Alcon’s Partner in Education for sponsorship of the White Coat Ceremony.
