Pacific University’s Kathrin Cawein Gallery of Art kicks off its 2016-2017 exhibition season on Tuesday, Sept. 6 with a showcase of US Olympic Track & Field Trials photography by Pacific assistant professor Jim Flory.

Jim Flory: The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat” consists of Flory’s work at the past three Olympic Trials (2008, 12, 16) held at historic Hayward Field in Eugene.

“The images that you see in this show are a collection of some of the best athletes in our country seeing dreams dashed or coming true in miliseconds thru the lenses of my cameras,” Flory said.

The exhibit opens at noon on Sept. 6 with a reception and talk by Flory and concludes on Friday, Sept. 30. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Admission is free.

Flory is a fine arts photographer who specializes in travel and sports photography. He has taught photography at Pacific University for more than 20 years and hopes his work will inspire a new generation of sports photographers and convey the drama and excitement implicit in an event of this magnitude.

Located at the heart of Pacific University, the Kathrin Cawein Gallery of Art is integrated into the southeast corner of the Harvey W. Pacific Hall. The gallery is named honor of the late Kathrin Cawein of New York, who beyond being an accomplished printmaker and contributor to Pacific University, established an endowed scholarship for students of the arts at Pacific. The fund was established through the sale of her intaglio etchings and engravings during exhibits at Pacific, as well as from the proceeds of her estate after death in 1996.

Gallery exhibits change regularly throughout the academic year and are provided at no cost to the public through the Art Department. For more information, please contact Emily Kramer at 503-352-1585 or emilykramer@pacificu.edu.
