Social Work Major Receives 2016-2017 Fulbright US Student Award

Mia Prohaska '16, a senior at Pacific University, has received a 2016-2017 Fulbright US Student Award to Thailand to teach English.

A social work major from Whitewater, Wis., Prohaska hopes to work with her assigned community in Thailand to help establish an after-school education center where students and adults can come and learn English and other basic skills.

She has worked for the university’s Center for Civic Engagement - a hub for community partnerships and service initiatives - in each of her four years at Pacific.

“I lived in Thailand my senior year of high school, so I am very excited to go back and help make a positive change to the country that changed me so profoundly,” Prohaska said. “I am so incredibly grateful beyond words to receive such an honor, which wouldn't have been possible without the help of my professors, parents and partner William.”

Prohaska is the second Pacific student to receive a 2016-2017 Fulbright award, joining biology major Bruno Gegenhuber.
