Winter 2015:

The Ecuadorian Experience: Language, Culture and Education

This 3-week travel course immerses students in the language, culture and educational system of Ecuador. It also exposes students to elements of pre-Colombian cultures in Ecuador that are still important today (religion, food, health care). Students will observe and teach in elementary/middle schools in Quito, and will participate in workshops that focus on a variety of regional indigenous cultural expressions. Students will also attend daily class sessions on literature and culture as well as lessons to increase their Spanish proficiency. Taught in Spanish, with some English, the program will be based at the Andean Center for Latin American Studies in Quito. Several educational excursions to local, historical and development sites will complement students' class work, and additionally there will be opportunities for service learning.

Kenya: Seminar on Globalization

This is a multidisciplinary, two-week seminar is lead by the faculty of Egerton University, in Njoro Kenya. The Rift Valley region of Kenya offers an ideal place for Study Abroad in Africa. Sites of interest include nearby Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru National Parks, the virtual geological and archeological wonderland that is the Rift Valley, large tea, coffee and flower plantations. More important perhaps are the social institutions the region offers, including schools, social service agencies, environmental organizations and NGOs.

United Kingdom: Theater in Mental Health

This Winter Term travel course will introduce students to the Converge program, an arts and health project  based at York St. John University in England. Converge makes university courses in the arts accessible to people who use mental health services. Students will learn about UK mental health service provision, arts as a pathway to higher education, the healing potential of performance practice, and evidence for the effectiveness of arts applications in mental health, and will work on theater skills with community members. Students will gain both experience with an established applied theater model and understanding of the challenges and processes of applied theater.Prerequisite: THEA 110 or APTH 215. 2 credits.
