Images & Videos on the Website

Looking to add some images to your event, news/media post or webpage? As part of a feature-rich website, quality images and multimedia enhances the overall content.

Uploading and Placing Images

Images can be added to any page on the site, including calendar events and news posts.

Photos for specific image fields, such as banner photos, are uploaded using a simple file uploader. Find the field on the editing screen and click "choose file." Images can also be uploaded and placed within the larger content area where the bulk of the text goes.

Note: You must log in with your PUNetID to view video tutorials.

Open the image properties window by clicking the image button in the body editor toolbar, and browse server to find your uploaded images. You can upload more images by clicking the upload button.

Alt-Text and Accessibility Standards

In order to maintain website accessibility, Alt-Text (also called alternative or descriptive text) is required of all webpage images. People with visual impairments depend on alt-text when using screen readers. People with limited internet or low data connections may be unable to load images.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines state "All non-text content that is presented to the user has a text alternative that serves the equivalent purpose." Alt-text is short, concise and describes the image in the context of the page.

Featured Videos & Video Standards

The Featured Video field on calendar entries, webpages, news posts and more allows you to add a video URL from Pacific University's Youtube.

Videos must be hosted on an official Pacific University channel.

Videos with ads are not permissible. Feature videos should have a resolution of at least 720p. Videos must follow copyright usage guidelines (public domain, fair use or used with permission).

Website Image Standards

Photos should look professional, be free from any distortion and high resolution for quality viewing on smartphones, tablets, and retina displays. Photos should follow the university's Photography & Multimedia strategy.

  • Professional looking photos or images (no selfies or blurry images)
  • Follows copyright usage guidelines (public domain, fair use or used with permission)
  • Color photographs only
  • Photos placed within the page body (not applicable to banner photos) should be less than 1 MB when possible. Larger files will slow page loading, especially over mobile networks.
  • No filters (vignette, distortion, soft focus)
  • Photos should relate to content
  • Rectangular or square shape only (no circular cropping)
  • No text or graphic overlays on photos
  • Free of borders
  • Follows Cropping for General Composition (pdf) tips
  • Free from digital photo modifications that drastically alter the original photo

It is preferable to not use a photo at all versus using a poor quality image or an image that does not have a clear connection to the page on the content. Photos should maintain the high visual quality of the site.

Banner Images | Banner images are dynamic, full-color images spanning the full width of the browser. They require an extreme landscape dimension of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a high-resolution.

Teaser Images | In general, teaser images appear when a webpage is pulled into another page as featured or related content. On calendar entries, teaser images also appear on a calendar entry page itself, below the title and date information. Teaser images for news/media posts appear in newsfeeds— if no teaser is uploaded, it will display a default image. Teaser images should be landscape photos with a dimension about 860 x 484 pixels.

Faculty & Staff Headshots | Faculty and staff photos on employee pages should be square headshots that include head and part of the shoulders of the person. They need to be square (220 x 220 pixels). Full body photos do not display well in smaller sizes and should be avoided.
