This number is also referred to as the TIN number on occasion.

A second widely used identifying number is the DUNS number. This is a commercially generated number, but it's often required by both federal and private agencies.

Federal Employed ID Number

Third, there's the Federal Employed ID Number. It's a modified version of the EIN, and it comes up occasionally in government documents.

Indirect Cost Rate

This is the rate the federal government determines reflects the true cost of research at Pacific, and it represents a cost over and above actual costs that we apply to all grants when appropriate. It does apply to all federal research grants, unless otherwise stated.

38 percent

Overhead Rate

This is the figure added to salaries you seek in a grant. It does not usually apply to student wages. It includes 7.65% for FICA, and it covers your insurance, retirement, pension, health care, employee benefits and other costs of your employment.

Then, there are a variety of passwords and user names associated with the National Science Foundation's NSF Fastlane system, Grants.gov and the eRA Commons system that manages many government grants, including NIH. All these passwords are kept in the Research Office. If you need access to these systems, or need help with submission processes, contact the research office at wilkesc@pacificu.edu.

Finally, the Research Office has a series of documents that may be asked for as you develop your proposal:

  • A letter from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service conforming our non-profit status
  • Audited Financial Statements from the last financial year
  • A Current Year Operating Budget
  • A List of the Board of Trustees, that is confidential, and to be used only when needed
  • Our Endowment Policy
  • The President's CV

It is also often important to know our legislators. At present, in September 2013, Suzanne Bonamici (D) is the representative of the First Congressional District, in which Pacific sits. Senators Ron Wyden (D) and Jeff Merkley (D) are the sitting senators from our state.
