Pacific University Facts

Pacific University is a diverse learning community offering a unique combination of undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in the liberal arts and sciences, education, business, optometry and the health professions.

The school was founded in Forest Grove in 1849 by Congregationalist pioneers. Originally the Tualatin Academy, it became Pacific University in 1854 and conferred its first baccalaureate degree in 1863.

Today, Pacific University serves nearly 3,500 students on its campuses in Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Eugene and Woodburn, and also operates a variety of healthcare clinics in the greater Portland area. Students and alumni hail from all 50 states and several countries around the world.

Accreditation & Memberships

Pacific University is an accredited member of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Particular programs are also accredited by: the Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association, the National Association of Schools of Music, the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education, the American Physical Therapy Association, the American Psychological Association, Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, the Commission on Dental Accreditation, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Oregon Board of Counselors and Therapists, and Teachers Standards and Practices Commission of the State of Oregon.

Pacific is a member of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the American Association of University Women, the Council for Higher Education of the United Church of Christ, the College Scholarship Service, the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges, the National Collegiate Athletics Association, and the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education. The university is also an active member in the Forest Grove and Hillsboro chambers of commerce, as well as the Portland Business Alliance.

Academics

Pacific University provides a small, nurturing learning environment, where students develop warm and supportive relationships with each other and with faculty and staff. Pacific emphasizes public service throughout its academic programs, and students have exceptional opportunities for experiential learning, from international travel and study to internships, research and cocurricular activities. Students experience personal growth and development in an atmosphere of thoughtful debate.

Pacific is the home to a number of unique centers that encourage students to engage in educational experiences outside normal classroom settings. 

Student Life

Housing - Pacific's Residence Life are at the heart of students' academic and social lives. You will study, meet friends, and grow as a person, all while being supported by professional and paraprofessional live-in staff members. And being able to jump out of bed two minutes before class starts and still make it in time is just a bonus. 

Clubs & Organizations - Pacific students often cite the opportunity to get involved in clubs and organizations as one of the most valuable experiences of their college careers. Activities range from intramural sports, forensics, student government and Greek life to outdoor adventures offered through the Outback program and community service opportunities with Circle K or Amnesty International clubs. Pacific also competes in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics and hosts a variety of intramural sports teams. Graduate and professional students also are involved in several clubs, both socially and in preparation for their careers.

Special Services - Career counseling, advocacy and health wellness education, tutoring and multicultural services are just a few of the special services available to all students.
