Adelante Mujeres Bridge
Adelante Mujeres (Women Rising) is a 501 (c) 3 organization whose goal is to educate and train low-income Latina women in the Cornelius, Forest Grove area to the GED level. Some of the women wish to continue their studies, and CGE has collaborated with ELI to design a bridge program that provides classes especially designed for the students to give them a sense of the type of material in and the pacing of college courses with the goal that some of the students may matriculate into college. There are currently 14 students in the bridge program, and Nancy Christoph has now extended the program so that the Adelante students are interacting with Pacific language students. We will approach Ford Family Foundation for funding for the extension of this program.
Nuevo Amanecer (New Dawn).
In the summer of 2004 CGE began a program for the Latina custodial workers to teach how to use computers. Myrna Trathan and Kathy Wilson-Fey have been teaching English classes. The childcare center at the UCC is available, but we need to organize student volunteers to staff the center. Myrna and Kathy have had to drop out, but we are looking for a new teacher and the funds to pay her.
Queer Programming
CGE provides a safe meeting space for Rainbow Coalition (Pacific’s LGBTQ club) and helps publicize Rainbow Coalition’s activities. CGE and PFLAG in cooperation with Artist Repertory Theatre (Portland) presented on 2/4 a performance/workshop based on the Laramie Project (murder of Matthew Shepard). We hope to produce The Laramie Project in October of 2007.
Housing Development Cooperation of NW Oregon
This organization addresses needs of the Hispanic/agricultural workers community. Initial discussions have taken place about how CGE can serve the women of this community. One idea is that the women in the housing projects and a group organized by CGE participate together in cooking classes with the goal of producing a Forest Grove Community cookbook.
Take Back the Night
This year we will partner with other groups to do a local Take Back the Night event.
Our Saudi Neighbors
CGE will organize a series of events for the Saudi women on campus.
