India
CGE has established a sister-center relationship with a women’s center at a college in Madurai, India called Lady Doak College (LDC). The purpose of the relationship is to facilitate the exchange of students, community and faculty scholars with our sister campus in India in order to study topics germane to CGE’s mission. The first group of 15 student visited Lady Doak in January of 2005. Plans now are to bring Indian students to Pacific, hopefully next year if funds can be raised, and the second group of students will travel to India in January of 2006.
India Community Group
CGE is sponsoring a community group to travel to India in February of 2007 to on a service-learning trip based on working with women and families.
Books for India
CGE has initiated a program for getting books to the Lady Doak College library, which is badly in need of texts. We have gathered about 6000 pounds of books. Some have been sent to Lady Doak, we have raised $2000.00 to send books, but the rest are in storage waiting for money to ship them. While in India I talked with the librarian, and we will work on a Ford grant with Oberlin College and LDC to get books to LDC which they will funnel to the villages on a Bookmobile model.
International Women’s Service Learning Institute
Long-range plans are to establish an International Women’s Service Learning Institute at Pacific, which would bring women from various countries together. Possibilities are women from India, Zambia, Mexico, and Austria. Martha Rampton and Lorely French visited Austria in May 2005 and established contact with the women’s center at the University of Klagenfurt. They are interested in the project.
