Homeland Security and Community Policing
A Symposium by the Sea
Two years after 9.11 and we continue to live with the uncertainty that these events have
produced. Most would agree that we cannot go back to old ways of thinking about national
(and therefore local…) security. What will the legitimate need for enhanced homeland
security do to our constitutionally enshrined ideals of freedom, privacy and justice?
What impact will national initiatives have on local community policing? How will
these initiatives affect the dynamic of police/community relations? Will the rapidly
changing structures for managing our security, immigration and intelligence needs
take account of regional and local realities?
