English Language Institute Student Orientation Schedule
August 15th, 16th, and 17th
Arrival Days
On these dates, International Programs staff are available to help new students with:
- transportation from Portland International Airport to Forest Grove
- checking in to on-campus housing
- hotel reservations
Monday, August 18th
Shopping Shuttle (Optional)
9:00 a.m. — 12:00 p.m.
Transportation will be provided to take you a large shopping complex where you can shop for household goods, bedding, clothing, and personal items.
ID Photo Session (Required)
1:00 p.m. — 1:30 p.m.
Transportation will be provided to take you a large shopping complex where you can shop for household goods, bedding, clothing, and personal items.
Placement Testing (Required)
1:30 p.m. — 3:30 p.m.
Place: Marsh Hall, Room 201
All ELI and ELI Transition program students must take this test. Transition students who do not yet have a test score on file can use this test to qualify for undergraduate class options.
Fall Kick-off Party (Optional)
5:30 p.m. — 8:00 p.m.
Meet new international students, returning international students, and the Office of International Programs staff at this fun annual event! Dinner will be provided. (Dress is casual)
Tuesday, August 19th
ELI Program Orientation (Required for All ELI & Transition Students)
9:00 a.m. — 12:00 p.m.
This mandatory meeting will cover immigration regulations, the SEVIS system and the U.S. health care system. Bring the following documents and information with you for a required U.S. immigration service check-in:

I-20 (F-1s) or DS-2019 (J-1s)

Health insurance card/policy

Insurance waiver form (if eligible for waiver)

Immunization & health history forms

After the immigration information, there will be an overview of the ELI program, student activities and opportunities, and campus life in the United States.
Welcome Luncheon with President Phil Creighton (Optional)
12:00 p.m. — 1:30 p.m.
Speaking & Writing Placement Tests (Required)
1:30 p.m. — 3:00 p.m.
ELI teachers will use results from the placement tests to determine your level placement.
Health Center Visit (Required for All Students who have not Provided Complete Immunization Records)
2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
All students must show proof of receiving MMR immunizations and a negative TB test before they can begin attending classes at Pacific. If you have not provided immunization records or your records are incomplete, this will be your final chance to receive the immunization. Wednesday, August 20th
Introduction to the U.S. Banking System (Optional)
9:00 a.m. — 11:00 a.m.
Learn about the banking services available in Forest Grove, get assistance opening an account, and learn about using online and automated banking.
Campus Tour
11:00 a.m. — 12:00 p.m.
While you’ve had plenty of opportunities to explore campus this week, this tour will give you a formal introduction to many of the important offices, buildings, and people you’ll need to know.
Lunch Break
12:00 p.m. — 1:00 p.m.
Computer Lab (Required)
1:00 p.m. — 3:00 p.m.
Learn how to log in to university computers and access your Pacific University email account. Pacific’s technical staff will be there to help set up your computers and answer your questions. If you have a laptop, be sure to bring it!
Thursday, August 20th
Portland Trip (Optional)
9:00 a.m. — 3:00 p.m.
This is your chance to learn how to use the public transportation system to see Portland and the surrounding communities. Lunch will be provided.
Friday, August 24th
Final Orientation Session (Required)
10:00 a.m. —12:00 p.m.
Meet at the ELI to pick up your class schedule and your student bill. Student bills are due at the business office today. Staff will be available to show you how to use the campus photocopiers and laundry facilities as well as answer any final questions you may have. Classes begin on Monday, August 25th.
