Pacific University has always been committed to education and service.
In the past year, we have reaffirmed that commitment, as we penned a new statement recognizing our origins, mission and vision. It was no easy task: Dozens of people looked deep into our history and imagined into our future to create a statement that recognizes who we have been, who we are and who we want to be.
The origins statement harkens to our past. It remembers and honors our roots in an orphanage and school that helped us become a “close nurturing environment that leads to genuine transformation in students’ lives."
Our mission recognizes our commitment to a “diverse and sustainable community dedicated to discovery and excellence in teaching, scholarship and practice that mentors students who think, create, care and pursue justice in our world.”
Our vision calls for us to “embrace discovery as an essential characteristic of teaching, learning, scholarship, practice and creative expression.” It reminds us that we achieve excellence “by investing in exceptional people.” It challenges us to “embrace a rich diversity of ideas, peoples and cultures” and to “incorporate sustainability in all of our endeavors.”
These statements are more than words; they are a manifestation of our identity and goals, and they are helping to drive us forward. They guide us when we start new academic programs, like the several undergraduate and graduate degrees launching this year; as we create new centers of study and learning, like those opened in these past few months; and as we welcome new people who will lead us into the future with integrity to our history.
None of this important work would be possible, though, without people like you: the countless friends and supporters who give to Pacific with their time, their energy and their financial gifts.
Thank you for your generosity and support of Pacific University and for keeping the Boxer Spirit of yesterday, today and tomorrow alive and well, both here at Pacific and in our world.
