Mr. Shield's home overlooks the wine country and coastal range from the western edge of the Chehalem Mountain. His previous studio in Forest Grove was featured in a special issue on studio space in "Sunset" magazine, and his latest studio on twenty-five acres of beautiful forest and pastures called "Dancing Trees Sanctuary for the Arts" promises to be much more.

Through his paintings, prints, murals, and sculpture, Jan shares his deep regard for the most western regions of the United States, especially Oregon, Hawaii, and the Southwest. The paintings especially are a comment on Naturalism, Romanticism, and at times symbolism. Other paintings and three-dimensional forms let the viewer feel the power, richness and substance he discovers in nature through a more abstract style of expression. His work is involved in creating layers of vision and form as a laminate of experience in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
