English Department: Literature
Students who choose to study Literature at Pacific have the opportunity to work in small classes with professors and fellow students who are passionate about the power of texts. Language shaped into stories, poetry, and plays has transformed civilizations. Essays have changed the course of history.
Courses offered in the department reflect the wide expertise and research concerns of our faculty. We instruct students to assess, discuss, and write about literature with an eye to the cultural, aesthetic, and formal influences of the period and place in which it was produced and encourage students to see the way in which texts have evolved through time.
Areas of study include the varied voices of American and British writers as well as texts from Asia, Africa, South America, Mexico and other locations. Contemporary approaches to literature infuse all the instruction offered by professors, and we strongly encourage our students to pursue one of Pacific's many options in interdisciplinary studies.
