Environmental Studies Graduates

Tara Rott

Tara is currently working in Houston, TX, working for an organization called Center For Humanity. Tara has been given the daunting task to help show the members of the organization the close connection between humanitarianism and environmentalism. It truly (at least for the time being) is a dream job for her. Tara has the freedom to develop the position into anything She dreams it to be. Tara recently traveled to the island of St. Lucia in the West Indies. Tara was asked to write up an assessment of the ecological health of the island especially Marigot Bay and how resort owners can minimize their impact and look for warning signs that they are damaging local ecosystems.

Ashley Hollenbeck

Ashley just finished training for Peace Corps Morocco Environment/Community Development division.  Ashley says it is amazing and she could not have asked for anything better.   During training she learned tamazight, a local Berber dialect, which she was skeptical about because of its practicality in the majority of the country (only 30% of the population speaks it) and in the future.

Although, after being forced to learn it Ashley realized that it is helpful for community integration and because it is such a difficult language, learning a language in the future will be much easier.   Also during training she took part in organizing a tree planting for earth day and a garbage pick up festival with a local association to promote clean water, as well as being elected to the Volunteer Advisory Council.  Her site and home for the next two years is located in central Morocco where the Middle Atlas Mountains meet the High Atlas in the Azilal providence in a town called Tilougite.   Ashley's site also includes the Tamga SIBE (Site of Biological/Ecological Importance). Her job includes designing an environmental education center for ecotourism and local use, ecotourism promotion focusing on local income generation, environmental education in schools, working on the SIBE development plan and gender development.   Ashley is truly supposed to serve as a liaison between the Water and Forest Ministry here and the people

Laura Kushner

Laura is a graduate student in the Environmental Toxicology Program at Clemson University.

Megan Plumlee

Megan is a PhD. Candidate in the Environmental Science and Engineering Program at Stanford University.  As an undergraduate at Pacific University, I worked on a project measuring the levels of mercury in tissues of Columbia River sturgeon.  Seeing the real consequences of anthropogenic pollution inspired me to apply my interest in chemistry to

environmental engineering and science.  During my time here at Stanford, I plan to study the fate/transport/impact of particular pollutants (like "emerging contaminants") in natural systems.  Currently, I am an analytical chemist/project engineer for a local study assessing the impact of using recycled water to augment the flow in nearby Coyote Creek, for the purpose of river restoration.
