About Professor Postma I write fiction, a highly addictive form of mythmaking. My work includes guiding students in their own pursuits as writers and readers of literature. All day and far into the night I am surrounded by stories—my own, those of authors of all kinds, and especially those produced by the talented students in my classes. We inhabit fiction; the characters become us. A good story can take us beyond our differences. It is a deep and crucial form of communication. Pacific University embraces the ethos that we are citizens of the world. For me that means using my skills to help children at orphanages in China get the education they need. I co-founded and chair the board for Fuling Kids International, a registered nonprofit organization. Recently I mentored women writers in Afghanistan through the Afghan Women Writers Project. In these endeavors I get to be a student, writer and friend. I collaborate with people who press on against great odds to improve their lives and the lives of others. Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” |
