Les Watanabe

Dance Instructor

UC Box: A131

Les Watanabe (Choreographer: Fall Choreographer’s Concert) received his BFA in dance from California Institute of the Arts and his MFA from UC Irvine as a Chancellor’s Fellow.  He taught in Portland from 1978-1980, giving master classes at the Reed College summer workshops and also as an Artist-in Residence at PSU.

After forming his own company in San Francisco, Les received invitations to teach at European dance festivals in Vienna, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Paris.  In the Northwest Les has taught at University of Oregon (Artist-in Residence), Vancouver School District, PCC, and numerous private studios.

In addition to his expansive career as a dance educator, Les has had an illustrious career as a performer.  He began dancing with Eugene Loring’s Dance Players.  He has performed as a soloist in many dance companies, and his concert work has been presented both nationally and in Europe.  Most recently, his Tablao Flamenco and Milonga were presented at the National High School Dance Festival. Cantes De Ida y Vuelta which will presented in The Autumn Choreographers’ Concert is a prime example of Les Watanabe’s curiosity and meanderings into the “greener grass over there.”
