About Mind and Evolution Annual Lecture

 

This is the third annual Mind and Evolution Lecture and the first time Psi Chi has reserved the Newmark Theater for their event.

Selection of speakers is based upon a vote by the members of Pacific Psychology Club and Psi Chi with the criteria of further promoting public knowledge and interest in the science of Psychology and specifically the areas of neuroscience and evolutionary psychology.

Previous year speakers brought: Dr. Helen Fisher of Rutgers University with her address, "Why We Love," and Dr. David Buss of the University of Texas, Austin and his evolutionary psychology address, "Sexual Conflict in Human Mating."

About Psi Chi National Honors Society

 

Psi Chi is the National Honors Society in Psychology, it was founded in 1929, for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Psychological Science (APS). The Pacific University Chapter of Psi Chi is a registered undergraduate student organization, partnered with the Pacific Psychology Club. The individual goals of Pacific Psi Chi is to advance not only student research, service, and fellowship but also scholarship. The annual Mind and Evolution Lecture serves as a large-scale scholarship event, wherein the students prepare and fundraise throughout the year to bring a prestigious speaker to Portland and to their induction ceremony the night of the speaking event.

 

Dr. Michael Shermer

 

Michael ShermerDr. Michael recived his B.A. in psychology from Pepperdine University, M.A. in experimental psychology from California State University, Fullerton, and his Ph.D. in history of science from Claremont Graduate University (1991). 

A few of Dr. Michael Shermer projects have been Founding Publisher of Skeptic magazine, the Executive Director of the Skeptics Society, a monthly columnist for Scientific American, the host of the Skeptics Distinguished Science Lecture Series at Caltech, and Adjunct Professor of Economics at Claremont Graduate University.

A few shows Dr. Michael Shermer has been on include The Colbert Report, 20/20, Dateline, Charlie Rose, Larry King Live, Tom Snyder, Donahue, Oprah, Lezza, Unsolved Mysteries, and other shows as a skeptic of weird.

Dr. Michael Shermer has been writing his latest book is The Mind of the Market, on evolutionary economics.
