A traditionalist as well as a technocrat , he shoots only film and prefers to print his own photography.

For sophomore Joseph Webb, art is a serious matter.  "I originally came here because of the film program; Pacific is one of two liberal arts schools in Oregon to offer degrees in film.  However, my main interest was always photograpy so I decided to get rid of the superfluous elements found in film and study just photography."

Why study art at Pacific? "Art is beyond language," Joe explains, and the idea of being able to communicate on a level other than verbal interaction is what he finds most intriguing. Joe selected photography as his medium because he has a special appreciation for the technology and mechanics of photography.

A traditionalist , Joseph shoots only film and prefers to print his own photography.  "There is something romantic about the process too."

When it comes to his experience at Pacific, Joe expresses mixed feelings.  Distance from the film and photography industries creates some challenges for art students looking to break into their field; however, Joe describes Pacific as "very academically focused"  and praises the University's World Languages department and study abroad programs which he has also been involved with.

Joe hopes to make a name for himself in photography. Meanwhile he appreciates the academic rigor of his Pacific experience and plans to take advantage of the Pacific Study abroad program.

Joe finds inspiration in the work of artist such as:

Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Brett Weston, Chuck Close, Andreas Gursky, Denis Rourve, and Gerard Laurenceau.
