Fulbright Scholarships

Purpose: The Fulbright Program seeks to promote international understanding and to foster cultural exchange. Awards promote cross-cultural interaction and mutual understanding by supporting one year of study, research, or teaching abroad. List of participating countries and the number of awards to each country varies from year to year.

Programs Funded: Applicants can design their own programs including university study, library or field research, and independent projects. Affiliation with an educational institution in the host country is required, even if the applicant is pursuing independent research. Awards vary from country to country but typically include transportation, books and tuition, health insurance, and living expenses.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should be graduating seniors, no age limit.
  • Applicants must be US citizens for the US Student Program (non US citizen applicants should speak with the Fulbright Coach about other Fulbright opportunities)
  • Applicants must be in good health.
  • Applicants must demonstrate language proficiency for proposed country of study.
  • Applicants may be in any field of study, but not every field of study is available in all program countries. Check the Fulbright website for the most up-to-date information.
  • Applicants must have evidence of ability to adapt to a new environment.

    Selection Criteria: Developing a strong, feasible and compelling proposal is the most important aspect of a successful Fulbright application. You must be able to complete your project in one country and in one academic year. Applicants must also demonstrate a strong academic record, a suitable level of language preparation, and a clear commitment to the host country community. Well-written essays, evidence of community involvement and ability to adapt cross-culturally are all important.

    Application Process: Interested sophomore and junior students should contact the Fellowship Office or Fulbright Coach. Applications require University endorsement and must be made through the Fellowship Office. Many proposals will require a letter of support or endorsement from an institution or organization that is a suitable host for the proposed project, therefore, time must be allotted for this in the application process. Applications are reviewed at the University level, by the US Fulbright Selection Committees and then by supervising agencies abroad. Final selection decisions are made in country and notification occurs in spring.
