George J. Mitchell Scholarships

Purpose: The George J. Mitchell Scholarship is named to honor the former U.S. Senator’s contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process. The scholarships are designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community.

Programs Funded: Twelve Mitchell Scholars are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Mitchell Scholarships provide tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend. Funding is for one year only.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old.
  • Applicants must complete their bachelor’s degree before beginning their studies in Ireland.
  • Applicants may be from any discipline, but the proposed course of study must be available at the university selected by the applicant.

    Selection Criteria: George J. Mitchell Scholarships applications are judged first on academic excellence and intellectual distinction. Although there is no minimum required GPA, it is understood that a prospective candidate must have the academic ability and preparation to succeed in a postgraduate program. In addition, applicants should have an outstanding record of leadership and be able to demonstrate a sustained commitment to service and community.

    Application Process: Applications require University endorsement and must be made through the Fellowship Office. Students interested in applying for a Mitchell Scholarship should contact the Fellowship Office no later than spring of their junior year
