| Six hours of upper-division courses in American history. | |
| Six hours of upper-division courses in American literature. | |
| Twelve hours of electives chosen in consultation with the advisor to create a coherent program of study of the United States with at least six hours of electives outside the Departments of History and English. | |
| The same requirements for a methodology course, junior tutorial, and senior thesis as all other IS majors. | |
International students for whom English is a second language and who elect the America concentration are exempt from the foreign language and study abroad requirements and take instead 27 hours in electives.
