Biomechanics and Exercise Science

Advanced biomechanics and Advanced Exercise Physiology are research intensive classes in the exercise science department that focus on the movement and physiology of exercise. An issue explored by some students is the disproportionate incidence of anterior cruciate ligament injury among female athletes.

Shown below is a photo taken during a study of impact force characteristics during landing.

To control the intensity of the landings, we often regulate drop distances by stepping off a raised platform. The stresses experienced during the landings are estimated with measurements from a force platform interfaced to a computerized data aquisition system.
