Peace & Conflict Studies

The peace and social justice minor engages students in investigating issues of social justice, inequality and violence among individuals, groups and the nations of the world.

Students choosing this minor are encouraged to develop a closely reasoned philosophical position on peace and social justice that can have lifelong application. The minor especially serves students who embark on careers in civic engagement, such as law, education, business, government, medicine and social work. It also prepares students from any major to be informed, active citizens.

Program Highlights

• Courses taught by faculty from a variety of different disciplines
• Civic engagement experiences, including projects for the Center for Gender Equity, mentoring school children and Latino literacy
• Conflict resolution skills and strategies learned and applied through simulation exercises
• Opportunity to travel for cultural immersion, field work, service learning and coursework

Courses

Classes in this interdisciplinary program explore a wide range of issues dealing with peace, social justice and change as well as dissent and conflict. Included are courses in ethics, social and historical aspects of addictions, conflict resolution and social inequality. These courses explore important issues, such as Vietnam, the civil rights movement, feminist theory and the Middle East.
