Course Description
An investigation of the relationship between human and non-human animals. What is the moral standing of non-human animals? We will study both the theoretical and practical facets of this question by focusing on the ethical issues raised by animal experiments and factory farming. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or above. Offered alternate years.
Credits: 4.00
Offered next during the 2010-2011 school year as a 2-credit course. There may also be separate 2-credit travel course to Farm Sanctuary in California.
Last offered in Fall 2008. In addition to reading Peter Singer, Tom Regan, Carl Cohen, Martha Nussbaum, Cora Diamond, R. G. Frey, Jan Naverson, Pythagoras, Aristotle, Seneca, Gandhi, Tolstoy, Descartes, and a number of other authors, we also went to Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary, which rescues farm animals. They have pigs rescued from factory farms affected by the floods in Iowa, horses and sheep that were starving when they arrived to the farm, and animals from research facilities, etc. The pictures below are from our trip to the farm.
