Course Description
An introduction to ethical theories and their application to a variety of moral problems and contemporary ethical issues. We will pay special attention to questions of personal conduct. How should I live? How do my personal choices affect society? What values should guide my decision-making? What would it mean for me to live an ethical life? Offered annually.
Credits: 4.00
Offered in Spring 2009, and in the 2009-2010 school year.
In this class, students study various ethical theories like contractarianism, utilitarianism, and virtue ethics. They write papers and take weekly reading quizzes. But they also work on a civic engagement project. For this project, students find an issue or a problem on campus or the community, and do something about it. Below are some examples of civic engagement projects students worked on in Fall 2008.
Whitney (right) organized an animal rights week at Pacific which included disseminating lots of information...as well as stickers and free baked goods! |
Bonnie campaigned for Obama's campaign for President. She designed posters, worked with other volunteers, canvassed for Obama, and encouraged people to vote. |
Phoebe and Krystal organized a workshop on social and economic inequalities in the United States.
|
Megan (right) raised awareness of third party candidates, especially Ralph Nader, by appearing in the newspaper and the radio, postering, contacting people on Facebook, and even by designing and wearing Nader-friendly clothing. |
Maryah became a volunteer coach for a girls' volleyball team at a local school. |
Charley chalked the campus with thought-provoking questions and sayings. His chalking triggered a lot of conversation on campus, and a series of articles in the Pacific Index. |
