RHA's Boxer BashOct 12, 2006, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Students, staff & faculty: RHA will host a celebration for the arrival of the new sculpture of the Boxer on Thursday, October 12, 4 p.m.-6 p.m., on the lawn of the Vandervelden apartments. Music, dessert, and entertainment will follow!
A giant metal statue descended on the campus of Pacific University last May. Just as students were leaving for summer break, the 1-ton Boxer-Pacific's mascot which was inspired after a Chinese incense burner and looks like a cross between a dog and dragon-quietly slipped onto its 6-foot high cement pedestal. Now, the University community is ready to officially welcome the newest Boxer to campus.
Pacific University's Residence Housing Association will host a celebration for the arrival of the new metal sculpture of the Boxer on Thursday, October 12, 4 p.m.-6 p.m., on the lawn of the Vandervelden apartments (on University Avenue at College Way).
Located on the walkway to the Vandervelden apartments, at 7-feet tall and weighing at least a ton, it's not just the newest art installation on campus, but the largest. Created by Mountaindale, Ore., artist Tim Tanner out of a variety of scrap metal pieces, the sculpture is a gift to the University from Pacific's students.
This Boxer Bash will include speeches from Pacific University President Dr. Phillip Creighton, sculpture artist Tim Tanner, Pacific Undergraduate Community Council President Katie Dolphin, and Residence Housing Association President Molly Fischer. Music, dessert, and entertainment will follow.
The Residence Housing Association, with Alana Peters (graduate of 2005) taking the lead, started the project about a year ago after seeing a horse sculpture by Tanner in the Valley Art gallery in downtown Forest Grove. The Pacific Undergraduate Community Council handed off the project to Fischer (Pacific student with the Class of 2007) and students from the RHA, who saw it to completion.
In case of rain, the festivities will move to the Field House in the Pacific Athletic Center.
