Continuing Education Course Descriptions

NEUROPATHIC PAIN
Presented by Laurie Lundy-Ekman
In neuropathic pain, pain signals indicate a malfunctioning nervous
system rather than signaling tissue injury or impending tissue injury.
Attendees will learn: 1. The basis of neuropathic pain 2. How to
determine whether or not pain is neuropathic 3. The pathology and
treatment of two specific types of neuropathic pain, complex regional
pain syndrome (also called reflex sympathetic dystrophy) and
fibromyalgia.
10 - 11:30 a.m.
PSYCHONEUROIMMUNOLOY: CONSIDERATIONS FOR INTERVENTION
Presented by Sandra Rogers
Understanding the complex processes that underlie an individuals health and differentiating between belief and evidence in mind-body research can help us use intervention more effectively. Participants will appreciate the complexity of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) by emphasizing the bidirectional nature of communication between the central nervous system and the immune system to sustain health. We will draw implications from research for chronic health conditions and health care in general.
