Mathematics Colloquium

Nov 9, 2009, 4:45 PM
Price 203

Roger Nelsen of Lewis and Clark College will speak on "The Enchantment of the Equilateral Triangle". Join us at 4:30 for refreshments in Price 201.

"Equilateral triangles lie at the heart of plane geometry. In fact Euclid’s first proposition—-Proposition 1 in Book I of the Elements—-reads: "To construct an equilateral triangle on a given finite straight line." Equilateral triangles continue to fascinate professional and amateur mathematicians. Many little-known theorems about equilateral triangles are striking in their beauty and simplicity.   Mathematicians strive to find beautiful proofs for beautiful  theorems. In this talk I’ll present a small selection of these little-known theorems about equilateral triangles and their lovely proofs."
