The Pacific University Dance Ensemble presents its Autumn Choreographers Concert Thursday, Nov. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 17 in the Tom Miles Theatre (2115 Pacific. Ave.) on the Forest Grove Campus.
Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m., and a special matinee on Saturday will commence at 2 p.m.
General admission is $8 and senior citizens (65+) and Pacific students, faculty and staff gaining entry for $5.
The Autumn Choreographers Concert is poignant, jazzy and playful and includes a dynamic mix of classical and contemporary dance.
The evening begins with prestigious guest choreographer Les Wantanabe's work Cantes de Ida y Vuleta, which blends African and Flamenco movements to the stage.
A special performance by BeatBangerZ, a professional tap company combines hoofing with rhythm-tap to push traditional boundaries of dance.
Six student choreographers—Emily Ambramson, Berkley Holzchuh, Jayme Vincent, Sarah Whitehead, Eric Asakawa, and senior Dancemajor Nikita Santino—plumb emotional depths with seven diverse pieces.
Pacific faculty member Mary Hunt presents the a collaborative work from her Dance Improvisation class, and Director of Dance Jennifer Camp presents two new works, Fall, Catch, Lean and a colorful and lively work, Choreography.
In 2004, artistic director Camp established the Pacific Dance Ensemble (PDE), which now consists of 15 gifted dancers from various dance backgrounds. Camp welcomes this wide range of experience.
The diverse training creates a balance within the group. PDE students are serious dancers, required to take daily technique classes in addition to the intensive rehearsals necessary for performances.
The company has danced in numerous Portland venues in the past four years, most recently traveling to California in July to perform in the Santa Cruz Fringe Festival.
Pacific’s Dance program took another great step forward this fall with the newly established Dance major.
"The time had come," Santino said, noting that she stayed an extra semester at Pacific in order to graduate the degree.
The Department of Theatre and Dance will be collecting donations for the second annual Coat and Blanket Drive in the lobby during the run of the performance.
New and gently used coats, new socks, men’s pants and sweatpants, blankets, sleeping bags and new hygiene items will be gladly accepted and redistributed to those in need.
