The Berglund Center for Internet Studies presents "Technology in Practice: Learning, Teaching and the Scholar-Practitioner" with speaker Steve Rhine, Ed. D. during the 2012 Oregon Technology in Education Network Conference on Sept. 15.

The Berglund Center for Internet Studies presents its first roundtable event of the 2012 Fall Series at noon Sept. 15 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UC, Pacific University Forest Grove campus. It is part of the 2012 Oregon Technology in Education Network (OTEN) annual conference, which will be held at the University.

Steve Rhine, Ed.D. is a professor for education in Willamette University’s School of Education in Salem, Ore. Dr. Rhine began his career as a high school mathematics teacher for 11 years before completing his doctorate degree at the University of California, Los Angeles. Since then, he has since been teaching in education for 17 years and counting. He has been awarded numerous grants worth more than $3.5 million for uses on education technology. He directed OTEN from 2001 to 2004 and has been instrumental in Teach Quality Enhancement Partnership grant, which funded OTEN from 2004 to 2009. He has recently been working on a $740,000 Fund for the Improvement Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE), a grant for research on algebraic thinking and developing technological tools to further develop an understanding of challenge topics in algebra.

With the information age arguably at its golden years, digital textbooks and tablets are increasing their presence in schools rapidly. In his presentation titled, “Technology in Practice: Learning, Teaching and the Scholar-Practitioner,” Dr. Rhine will talk about the potential implications of one-to-one technology use in the classroom.

The OTEN annual conference is a yearly event that brings together educators from all over the state of Oregon to share ideas in order to improve teaching and learning by integrating technology in the curriculum. This year, the event will be held at the Pacific University Forest Grove campus on Sept. 15. For more information, visit the 2012 OTEN Annual Conference website.

The Berglund Center facilitates both theoretical discussion and practical action relating to the impact of the Internet upon individuals and their communities worldwide. It is endowed through a generous gift from Pacific University alumni Drs. Mary and James Berglund of La Jolla, Calif.

The Roundtable series began in 2005 and features topics of significant current concern relating to the impact of the Internet. All discussions are videotaped and available online at http://www.vimeo.com/bcis.
