The Berglund Center for Internet Studies presents Connecting and Learning with Social Media with speaker Ron Peck as their November Roundtable, co-sponsored by Career Development Center, Tuesday, Nov. 19.

The Berglund Center for Internet Studies will present its third roundtable event of the 2013 Fall Series at noon on Nov. 19 in the Pulse, UC, Pacific University Forest Grove Campus. The presentation is co-sponsored by Career Development Center.

Ron Peck, our keynote speaker, is a veteran educator of 21 years; 16 as a social studies teacher and five as a high school administrator. After five years in administration he chose to return to the classroom where he has worked to integrate technology for his students.  Outside the classroom he works on development of technology integration in his district as well as train staff.

In 2010, Ron started an online discussion group on Twitter (#sschat) that meets once a week covering a variety of topics to help social studies teachers. The group’s website sschat.ning.com is a place for social studies teachers to collaborate and find great resources and ideas.

Of late Ron just finished work on a national conference for social studies teachers, Edcamp Social Studies that was held in Philadelphia in March 2012. Now he is working on educational consulting and developing presentations for conferences, schools and districts.  In addition to his teaching and consulting, he recently became the online technology integration trainer for NCSS (National Council for the Social Studies) and BER (Bureau of Education and Research) with a focus on integrating technology in Social Studies.

His presentation, entitled “Connecting and Learning with Social Media”, will focus on how to use the Internet and social media in establishing an online network of professionals; connecting and sharing resources as well as providing ongoing support for the profession. In this particular case, the focus is the field of education and the primary platform is Twitter.

The Berglund Center facilitates both theoretical discussion and practical action relating to the impact of the Internet upon individuals and their communities worldwide. The Roundtable series began in 2005 and features topics of significant current concern relating to the impact of the Internet. All Roundtables are videotaped and available online at http://www.vimeo.com/bcis.
