Dr. John Hayes is a longtime proponent of environmental sustainability.

He holds a bachelor of science in chemistry from Benedictine University and a doctorate in biochemistry from Purdue University. He completed post-doctorate work at The Johns Hopkins University.

He has an extensive background in alternative energy sources and technology, and he served for several years on the board of the American Solar Energy Society, including a term as vice chair.

Hayes is an avid outdoorsman who particularly enjoys canoeing, kayaking and birding. He has been published in consumer guides for home energy efficiency, as well as in guides for canoing and kayaking enthusiasts.

Hayes retired as dean of the Pacific University College of Arts & Sciences in 2012, after nine years in the position. Prior to his tenure at Pacific, he served as a professor of chemistry and dean of Arts & Sciences at Marlboro College in Vermont.
