Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program

The scholarship provides funding for Gilder Lehrman History Scholarships who participate in a five-week summer research program at Columbia University in New York City. Another program provides funding for a week-long research seminar.

Programs Funded

Students will use primary sources from the Gilder Lehrman collection, which focuses heavily on the antebellum era in the United States, to conduct original research. The final product will be a publication or a historical documentary. Professional historians will deliver talks on methodology and on choosing a career in the field. Participants will also take part in field trips to local museums, libraries and historical societies. More information can be found on their website.

Eligibility

This program is designed for History majors who have either sophomore or junior-level standing.

Selection Criteria

The program is designed to provide an introduction to careers in history. Grades and writing samples from history classes as well as an interest in pursuing a career or advanced degree in the field of history are important.

Application Process

Application materials include a 1-2 page essay, college transcripts, resume and cover letter, two recommendation letters and a brief writing sample.
