Business Administration | Academic Advising Handbook

The College of Business (COB) offers a major and minor in Business Administration and a major in Accounting. Only a grade of C- or better may be used to satisfy major and minor requirements.

Students who have decided to major in Business Administration or Accounting should select a faculty advisor in the College of Business during their sophomore year.

College of Business students are encouraged to pursue a minor that may complement their career goals. For example, students have pursued minors in Biology, Communications, Economics, Foreign Languages, Math, Media Arts, Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology.

Notes for Course Planning

First Year

Economics. ECON 181 satisfies the economics requirement. Students from older catalogs who have only taken ECON 101 or 102 can take ECON 181 to complete this requirement.

Second Year

Accounting. ACCT 201 does not have a prerequisite and ACCT 202 requires sophomore standing. We recommend students take ACCT 201 followed by ACCT 202.

Statistics. The following courses satisfy the statistics requirement: BA 301, MATH 207, MATH 316, or SOC 301. We recommend BA 301, which has a prerequisite of MATH 122, so students whose math placement is “I” (MATH 122) should begin MATH 122 immediately and then complete BA 301. All these courses will also satisfy the Mathematics Core requirement.

Third Year

Most courses require a junior standing (BA 306, BA 309, BA 360). BA 305 requires Economics and ACCT 201. BA 350 requires Economics and Statistics.

Fourth Year

BA 405 requires all core courses except BA 306. BA 405 and BA 490 must be taken concurrently.

Transfer Information

The College of Business will accept completed courses provide they meet our equivalency requirements.

The Business Administration program is designed to have flexibility and accommodate students transferring into sophomore or junior years provided they have certain prerequisites (e.g., Economics)

Business Administration Minor

The Business Administration minor provides undergraduate students in any non-business major a significant introduction to business and management. Students will gain an understanding of business theory, practices, and applications with specific coursework in economics, accounting, marketing, management, and finance.

Students who graduate with the Minor in Business Administration can apply their knowledge to find professional opportunities in almost any type of organization, from large corporations to small businesses including in government and nonprofits. The Business Administration minor holds significant impact as it tells future employers that you know how a company works and that you have developed additional skills and perspectives, all of which give you an advantage in a competitive job market.

Students intending to minor in Business Administration should consult with a College of Business faculty member to get faculty approval.
