Mathematics Major

The three templates below show typical schedules for majors with varying levels of initial preparation/performance. MATH 240 is prerequisite to most upper division courses and therefore should be completed as early as the student is ready for the course. Freshman entering with MATH 227 credit should enroll in MATH 240 in the fall of the freshman year, and then continue to take at least one mathematics course each term. CS 150 should also be completed as early as possible.

Refer to the following table for Level Placements of the below templates:

Level Mathematics Courses Eligible Quant SAT or ACT HS Math
IV 227, 240

AP Calculus AB Score or AB Subscore of 4 or 5

IB Mathematics HL score 5 or higher

III 226 SAT 570 ACT 24 Three years w/ Trigonometry
II  125, 207 SAT 530 ACT 21 Three years
I 122, 165, 212, 221, 223 Any Any

Mathematics majors come to Pacific with a variety of backgrounds. In general, potential mathematics majors should:

  1. Complete the calculus sequence, Math 226-7-8, as early as possible. Complete Math 227 and Math 306 by the end of the sophomore year in order to finish in four years.
  2. Complete Math 240 as early as the student is ready, as it is prerequisite to most upper-level mathematics courses. Freshmen starting in Math 227 might be ready for Math 240 in the spring, and should consult with a mathematics faculty member.  Entering freshman with a credit for an entire year for calculus (Math 226-227) should immediately register for Math 240.
  3. Complete Math 306 and Math 326 by the end of sophomore year.
  4. Complete Computer Science 150 no later than fall of the junior year.

Optional Specializations in the Mathematics Major

These specializations are optional and not required to receive a major in mathematics. Courses can be used to satisfy both requirements for the mathematics major and an optional specialization.

Students whose career goal is in financial mathematics or the actuarial field should complete the Actuarial Science specialization. Students who will be attending graduate school in mathematics should complete the Advanced Mathematics specialization. Students interested in a career in mathematical biology should complete the Biomathematics specialization. And, students who intend to become high school teachers should complete the Secondary Mathematics Education specialization.

Students completing a specialization are well served by using some of the courses in the specialization to satisfy requirements for the core major.

Actuarial Science

MATH 316

ECON 101 and 102

ACCT 201, 305

One of the following: BA 306, 345, 445, ECON 321

Advanced Mathematics
