The media arts program provides students with a broad background in the media with preparation for a career in media-related areas. Students learn how to write for print and broadcast, how to create still and moving visual images, and how to use the latest computer communication technology. Graduates are prepared for meaningful work in public relations, corporate and institutional communications, and marketing.
- Take a wide range of courses in writing, editing, design, video production, integrated media and photography
- Participate in hands-on learning opportunities with the student newspaper’s print and web editions, as well as student media and public relations internships
- Use a digital media lab that includes graphic design, illustration, web design, and digital audio and video production hardware and software
- Pursue a semester abroad studying media at York St. John University in York, England
The program emphasizes theoretical and social aspects of the media as well as the creative and technical components. The Department of Media Arts enables students to become creative media makers and critical thinkers. Students are encouraged to create media as self-expression to engage with the world around them, to foster inter-cultural and interdisciplinary dialogue, and to reflect on social issues.
At Pacific University, media majors are given the opportunity to get involved in a variety of areas through internships and work with student media outlets such as The Pacific Index newspaper and its companion website, as well as the Pacific University Media Arts (PUMA) student organization. These activities plus the independent senior capstone project experience are designed to give students a chance to explore the creative use of the media in a way that best suits their specific interests. They leave Pacific with knowledge, experience and examples of their abilities.
Graduates with a media arts major from Pacific University do not gravitate to a single industry. Because technology, communication and creativity play such an important role in nearly every field — from an independent artist to big business — graduates find themselves applying their media backgrounds in a variety of ways.
Our graduates are print and broadcast journalists, digital media video producers, web developers, public relations professionals, creative directors, nonprofit staffers, sports information directors, and book editors.
