Request for Proposals 2014
Purpose: The purpose of this program is to develop research collaborations between the faculty and students at Pacific University and those at CMOP. Any Pacific University faculty member who is interested in this program should begin by reading the CMOP Integrated Research Plan in order to learn more about the context to which collaborations are expected to contribute. A list of CMOP faculty who are available as potential collaborators can be found here. Pacific faculty members are encouraged to contact the CMOP faculty members from that list who might share research interests. If, after the initial contact, it appears that a collaboration might develop, funds are available to provide a lunch meeting between the Pacific and CMOP faculty members. Award Levels: There are three levels at which CMOP funded grants may be awarded.
- $25,000 maximum; $20,000 minimum (faculty stipend, up to two student stipends, and up to $15,500 for equipment, supplies, and non-conference travel).
- $15,000 maximum; $9,500 minimum (faculty stipend, up to two student stipends, and up to $5,500 for equipment, supplies, and non-conference travel).
- $7,000 maximum; $3,500 minimum. This award is for student stipends only and is meant for faculty members who currently have other sources of funding to support up to two additional students.
Your proposal must specify the award level sought. You may submit a single proposal for funding levels (1) and (2) if you wish (only one would be awarded), but you would need to submit separate budgets for each funding level. Additionally, you may request that your proposal be automatically considered for an Internally Funded PRISM grant if your CMOP proposal is unsuccessful. In that event, you would be contacted and asked to provide a revised proposal based on the level of funding allowed for those grants.
Student Stipend: $3,500 for a minimum of 10 full-time weeks of work. Students are responsible for housing and may live on campus for a fee.
Faculty Stipend: $6,000 for minimum of 8 full-time weeks of work (students must to be able to work safely and independently if the faculty member is absent). Partial summer awards are not allowed.
Post-Grant Report: Anyone awarded a grant must submit a post-grant report on its results. Reports are due by Dec. 31, 2014.
End-of-Summer Report: Any student awarded a grant must submit a report of their summer research project by Aug. 15, 2014. A report template can be obtained on the reporting section of this website.
CMOP-National Science Foundation Site Visit: Anyone awarded a grant agrees to be prepared to participate in and (as appropriate) present at the annual CMOP-NSF site visit that will most likely occur in May or June of 2015.
Pacific Undergraduate Research Conference: Anyone awarded a grant agrees to submit a poster to the Pacific Undergraduate Research Conference, fall 2014. Dissemination of research results at the conference should acknowledge the Pacific Research Institute for Science and Mathematics and the National Science Foundation Cooperative Agreement OCE-0424602 for funding.
Murdock Undergraduate Research Conference: Anyone awarded a grant agrees to submit a poster to the Murdock Undergraduate Research Conference, fall 2014. Dissemination of research results at the conference should acknowledge the Pacific Research Institute for Science and the National Science Foundation Cooperative Agreement OCE-0424602 for funding.
External Dissemination: Peer-reviewed publication is expected. Any external dissemination of research results should acknowledge the Pacific Research Institute for Science and Mathematics and the National Science Foundation Cooperative Agreement OCE-0424602 for funding.
PRISM/CMOP Administrative Committee: A committee, assembled from the disciplines named above along with one faculty representative from CMOP, will review proposals. The Pacific faculty members on the committee will be chosen from those who have not submitted CMOP funded PRISM proposals. The committee will forward a ranked list of recommended proposals to the CMOP Senior Management Team who will make the final decision regarding awards.
Funding Criteria: First year of support: The Review Committee will use the following evaluative criteria -
- The research includes an active collaboration with at least one named CMOP faculty, and his/her students and/or staff.
- The research asks interesting questions, is important to the field (discovery of knowledge Boyer category is typically expected), and is relevant to the goals and mission of CMOP.
- The research is accessible to Pacific University undergraduate students and the student experience is likely to be high quality.
- The necessary equipment, supplies, and lab/field space are in place or would be purchased with allotted CMOP funds.
- The project shows promise for continued outside funding.
- The project shows promise for peer-reviewed publication.
Additional years of support: In order to receive an additional year of funding, the faculty member’s proposal must pass the same evaluative criteria outlined for the first year of funding and must show progress toward peer-reviewed publication. This progress will be taken into consideration in recommending further funding. Additionally, faculty members who receive additional years of support are expected to contribute to developing the campus research community (for example, a faculty member might organize undergraduate research seminars during the academic year or community building events during the summer).
There will typically be 1-3 awards granted per year for this program. There are no limits on the number of additional years of support that a faculty member can apply for.
When submitting a proposal, you will be asked for the following items separately:
- Name of Principal Investigator (required)
- Name of CMOP faculty collaborator (required)
- Date (required)
- Funding level (required)
- Request to be considered for internal funding (optional)
- Sources of PRISM funding in last 5 years (required)
- Years of prior PRISM support (required for sources stated in g)
External grant proposals submitted in last 5 years (required)
Indicate agency, amount, dates of submission/award and whether it is related to this proposal.
Peer-reviewed publications in last 5 years (required)
List all peer-reviewed publications that have been published, accepted, or are in preparation. Provide complete citation and title, and use asterisks to indicate undergraduate co-authors.
Conference presentations in last 5 years (required)
List all conference presentations that have been given or are in preparation. Provide complete citation and title, and use asterisks to indicate undergraduate co-authors.
Undergraduates mentored in last 5 years (required)
Give names of all students who worked on research with you and the dates that the work took place. Use asterisks to indicate which students worked on projects related to this proposal.

Each proposal must list a CMOP faculty member as collaborator . A letter from the CMOP faculty member is required and must certify that the proposed work has been discussed and agreed upon by the PI and the CMOP faculty member. Note: Any faculty from the OHSU Institute of Environmental Health qualifies, even if he/she is not currently funded by CMOP. No funding is provided to the CMOP faculty member for the collaboration.

Proposal Style Guide
The proposal body (sections I-IX below) should be not exceed 3 pages in length and should have the following format:
- Title of project:
- Provide a general context for the project. Does the project continue from previous work?
- Experimental Plan
- Describe the research in enough detail so that readers will understand the protocols. Explain the roles of the student and the faculty member.
- Significance of Project
- Describe the importance of the project to the field. Will it continue beyond the summer? What are the prospects for outside funding in the future? Describe how the project fits within the CMOP science and education mission.
- Expected Outcomes
- Describe the likely places the results of this work will be externally disseminated (national and/or major regional conferences, peer-reviewed journals, etc.). What is the likely timeline for the work to be disseminated?
- Faculty Stipend ($6,000)
- Student Stipend ($3,500 per student researcher, min. 1 and max. 2)
- Equipment and supplies (max. $15,500 for level 1, max. $5,500 for level 2) - provide justification
- Total budget (sum of A, B, and C above; max. $25,000/min. $20,000 for level 1;
- max. $15,000/min. $9,500 for level 2; max. $7,000/min. $3500 for level 3)
VIII. Address the following questions:
- Where will the research be carried out? What facilities are needed, and are they available?
- What equipment and supplies are needed (beyond those in C above), and are they available?
- Is the research contingent on raising any other funds or on finding any other resources? If so, what are those?
- What other funding, if any, will you have between now and September 2012?

- Provide details about your contributions to the development of the campus research community as described in the Funding Criteria section of the RFP.
