Each year Pacific University and the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation join forces to send a group of interdisciplinary students and faculty to Nicaragua to provide health related services to Nicaraguan elders. Nicaraguan elders experience the long-term effects of aging, poverty and a lifetime of poor health care.
The program addresses the health needs of abandoned elders living in a care centers operated by local charitable organizations. The centers house elders who can no longer work and do not have family to care for them.
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western hemisphere forcing many young people to find work in other countries, leaving behind their elderly family members.
