Welcome to Pacific's Bachelor of Health Science Program
Pacific University’s College of Health Professions (CHP) is dedicated to helping students become leaders in the dynamic field of healthcare. Our new Bachelor of Health Science (BHS) degree program is designed for the working professional with an Associate’s degree and direct experience in the healthcare field. The flexibility provided through the use of distance technology allows our students to balance career, family, and college to complete their Bachelor's degrees and move their careers forward. We prepare students for career advancement in healthcare management to work in hospitals, federally-qualified health centers, long-term care facilities, health insurance companies, surgical centers, outpatient clinics, and public health agencies.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, 2012), the Medical and Health Services Manager occupation “is expected to grow by 22 percent or 68,000 jobs from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations.” BLS also reports that the entry-level education for this occupation is a Bachelor’s degree, with a Master’s degree common and/or preferred by employers (see: US Bureau of Labor Statistics).
For those interested in our Masters of Healthcare Administration program but lacking a Bachelor’s degree, the BHS program provides an opportunity for students to complete an undergraduate degree and apply for admission to the MHA program.
The BHS degree program also can provide further educational opportunities for those individuals with clinical training at the Associate’s level who seek to enter graduate clinical programs at Pacific University, but need a Bachelor's degree and course prerequisites completed first. Some applicants may need to complete additional math and sciences courses before applying to graduate programs in the clinical sciences.
The following programs are available from Pacific University and provide possible health professions pathways for students with the appropriate healthcare experience and applicable Associate's degrees who complete the BHS:
- Occupational Therapy
- Physical Therapy
- Physician Assistant Studies
- Professional Psychology
- Speech-Language Pathology
The flexibility of course delivery and the health professions pathways available through the BHS distance-education program enables the working adult learner to advance their career in healthcare. BHS students develop an in-depth understanding of the field and enhance their analytical and critical thinking skills in a way that can only be strengthened through real-world application and experience. Building on Pacific’s reputation and expertise in delivering high-quality, interdisciplinary healthcare education, the BHS program is designed for those individuals who seek to become innovative leaders in the field of healthcare.
