Student Orientation Schedule

Fall 2012

Monday, August 20th

Arrival Day

Welcome!  On these dates, International Programs staff will


Pacific staff members will give you daily schedules explaining where to meet for meals and activities before orientation starts on Tuesday.

IMPORTANT!   Please follow this schedule for your meals during ELI Orientation week.  The University Center cafeteria will be serving other orientation groups during the week.  Our ELI staff will go with you when we eat at the University Center during orientation week


The regular university meal plan begins Saturday, August 25th.  Meal times on Saturday and Sunday are Brunch 11:30am – 1:00pm and Dinner 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm.


Tuesday, August 21st 


7:45 a.m.-8:30 a.m.

Meeting Place:  Gilbert Hall, 4th floor lounge

ELI Orientation (Required for all ELI & Transition students)

8:30 a.m.

Meeting Place:  IP Offices, Scott Hall

ELI and Transition students will meet at our front desk.  One of our ELI teachers will then take you to another room for testing

You MUST bring the following documents with you for this required meeting.


Note:  Most students will purchase Pacific University health insurance.  If you are eligible for an insurance waiver, you must also bring your health insurance card/policy.  You will need this information to complete the insurance waiver form

We will collect these documents, make copies for your student folders, and return the documents to you before the afternoon shopping trip.  An ELI teacher will walk with you to Marsh Hall for your next session

Placement Testing (Marsh 101)

9:00 a.m. ---11:00 a.m.

All ELI and ELI Transition program students must take this paper TOEFL. Your score is ready the next day. Transition students can use the scores to enter undergraduate classes.

Shopping Shuttle (Optional)

11:15 a.m. -- 5:00 p.m.

Meeting Place:  IP Offices, Scott Hall

Pick up your passport, I-20 and any other important papers at the IP front desk.  You may need your passport for identification when purchasing a cell phone today.

We take you a large shopping center where you can buy household goods, bedding, clothing, and personal items.  We help answer your shopping questions and can help you get cell phones.

Plan to eat your lunch at the shopping center.  There will be many different restaurants to choose from.  Bring your cash or credit/debit cards AND the mailing labels with your Pacific University address.  You will need your mailing address to sign up for a cell phone plan.

Fall Kick-off Party (Optional)

6:00 p.m. — 8:30 p.m.

Meeting Place:  IP Offices, Scott Hall

Meet new international students, returning international students, and the Office of International Programs staff for bowling and fun!  Dinner will be provided. (Dress is casual, but be sure you have socks if you want to go bowling).


Wednesday, August 22nd



8:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m.

Meeting Place:  Gilbert Hall, 4th floor lounge

Computer Lab

9:00 a.m. –11:15 a.m. 

Meeting Place:  Marsh LL12

Learn how to log in to university computers and access your Pacific University email account.  Pacific’s TIC (Technical Information Center) staff will be there to help set up your computers and answer your questions.  If you have a laptop, be sure to bring it!  The staff can help you set up your wireless access and answer questions about using your laptop in the dorms.


Health Center Visit

10:15 a.m . – 12:00 pm

Meeting Place:  Gilbert Hall, 4th floor lounge

(This session is ONLY for students who need to meet immunization/TB requirements.  A staff member will go with you to the Student Health Center and bring you to join the regular orientation program when you are finished.  Scot will let you know on Tuesday night if you need to go to the Health Center).

Mailroom Session

11:15 a.m. ---12:00 p.m.

Meeting Place:  Marsh LL12

We will take you to the university mailroom to get your mailbox key and introduce you to mail services and staff.  Your UC Box (Pacific University mailbox) number is listed on the mailing labels in your purple folder. 

Lunch Break

12:00 p.m. — 1:30 p.m.

Meeting Place:  University Center

Our staff members will guide you through the cafeteria and explain some of the different choices you have on the university meal plan.  Be sure to bring your Boxer Card with you.  You will need to show it to the cashier.   


ELI Program Testing & Orientation

(Required for all ELI & Transition students)

1:30 p.m. -- 4:00 p.m.

Meeting Place:  Marsh 101

During this session, you will also take writing and speaking tests to help us place you in the right level.  You will also learn about the ELI classes, attendance policies, and academic expectations at Pacific.

Dinner (Optional)

5:00 p.m.--6:30 p.m.     

Meeting Place:  IP Offices, Scott Hall

Students can make their own dinner plans OR go to Pac Thai, a local restaurant, with Scot.  After we eat, you can explore the weekly farmers’ market on Main Street.     

Thursday, August 23rd



8:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m.

Meeting Place:  Gilbert Hall, 4th floor lounge

ELI Program Orientation

9:00 a.m.--11:00 a.m.                 

Meeting Place:  Marsh 101

We will teach you about immigration rules, SEVIS, and the U.S. health care system. You will also fill out required forms for your student file.

Campus Tour

11:00 a.m. –12:00 p.m.

While you’ve had plenty of opportunities to explore campus this week, this tour will give you a formal introduction to many of the important offices, buildings, and people you’ll need to know.   Our tour will end at the University Center, where we will take a break for lunch.


Lunch / Vendor Fair (University Center Cafeteria)

12:00 p.m. --- 2:00 p.m.

Our staff members will again be available to answer your questions about the meal plan and your dining options in the cafeteria.  Be sure you have your Boxer Card with you. 

When you are finished eating, take some time to visit the Vendor Fair.  Different community businesses and university groups will be explaining how they can help you and how you can get involved in clubs or activities that interest you.  Some of tables will be giving away free things, so look around and have fun!

Introduction to the U.S. Banking System (Optional)

2:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m. 

Meeting Place:  IP Offices, Scott Hall

Learn about the banking services available in Forest Grove, get assistance opening an account, and learn about using online and automated banking.  Bring your passport, I-20, and Pacific University mailing address with you!  You are not required to open a bank account, so if you choose not to, you have free time until dinner.

Required for students who were not present on Tuesday morning)

Friday, August 24th



9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.

Meeting Place:  Gilbert Hall, 4th floor lounge

Class Schedules

9:00 a.m.—10:00 a.m.

Meeting Place:  Scott Hall IP Offices

Your class schedules will be available at the IP front desk.  You can look over your classes and room assignments during breakfast.  Please ask one of your Orientation Leaders if you are not sure about where your classrooms are.

Portland Trip (Optional)

10:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m.

Meeting Place:  IP Offices, Scott Hall

Learn how to use Tri-Met and the MAX (Portland’s public transportation system) as our staff take you to downtown Portland for shopping and sightseeing. Lunch at a downtown restaurant is included. 

The Portland trip is the last ELI Orientation activity.  You will have free time to relax and explore Forest Grove and the surrounding area on Saturday and Sunday.

Friday Night Lights (Optional)

5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Meeting Place:  Lincoln Park Stadium


Meet outside Lincoln Park Stadium to learn more about this event for all new students. 

Saturday, August 25th

Pacific University Meal Service begins! 

On weekends there are two main meals:  brunch & dinner.

Brunch is from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Dinner is from 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

If you have an Aramark meal plan, your Boxer ID card is also your meal ticket.  Give your ID to the attendant after you have chosen your food. 

If you do not have an Aramark meal plan, you can still eat at the cafeteria and pay for your meal with cash or a debit card.

Shopping Trip to Fred Meyer

10:45 p.m. –1:00 a.m.

Meeting Place:  Near the dormitories—look for the buses!

Pacific students are allowed to do late night shopping at this local store after it closes its doors to the public.  Buses will take students from campus to Fred Meyer and then bring them back again.  You must bring your Boxer card.  See your RA for more details!

Monday, August 27th

9:30 a.m.  ELI Classes Begin!

Go to the room listed on your class schedule.  Your teacher will meet you there.

If you have any questions or aren’t sure where to go, come the IP Office in Scott Hall!
