Open Access Journals

Open access journals do not charge subscription fees, and their full-text articles are available freely online. In the list below, we have listed some sites/portals that you can use to find open access journals/articles that are of interest to you.

PubMed Central

PubMed Central (PMC) is the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.

Free Medical Journals

The Free Medical Journals Site was created to promote the free availability of full text medical journals on the Internet. The site currently lists over 1,800 journals that are either entirely open access or that are freely available after an embargo period (delay) of usually 6-12 months.

Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

DOAJ is one of the most comprehensive lists of open access journals available. Journals are gathered into subject-specific lists, which you can browse to find journals. You may also search for journals, and also search for articles within journals whose content is also listed on DOAJ.

BMJ

The BMJ provides open access to peer reviewed research as part of its commitment to readers and authors.

BioMed Central

BioMed Central is an STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) publisher of open access journals. All original research articles published by BioMed Central are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication. BioMed Central views open access to research as essential in order to ensure the rapid and efficient communication of research findings.

Highwire Press Free Journals

Highwire Press is an epublishing platform from Stanford University. Not all journals on the Highwire site are freely available, but there are many that make their back issues freely available, and some that are completely open access. HP provides free access to over 2,000,000 free articles and counting!

MedKnow Publications

Medknow Publications is a publisher for peer-reviewed, online/print+online journals in the area of STM. Medknow is the largest open access publisher publishing on behalf of learned societies and associations. Medknow pioneers in 'fee-less-free' model of open access publishing and provides immediate free access to the electronic editions of the journals majority of which do not charge the author or author's institution for submission, processing or publication of the articles.

Public Library of Science (PLoS) Journals

The PLoS publishes several highly-regarded open access journals: PLoS One, PLoS Biology, PLoS Medicine, PLoS Computational Biology, PLoS Genetics, PLoS Pathogens and PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

The National Academies Press

The National Academies Press (NAP) was created by the National Academies to publish the reports issued by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council, all operating under a charter granted by the Congress of the United States. The NAP publishes more than 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, engineering, and health, capturing the most authoritative views on important issues in science and health policy.   NAP offers many titles in electronic Adobe PDF format. Hundreds of these books can be downloaded for free by the chapter or the entire book, while others are available for purchase.
