Reality shows take over American TV
"When television is good, nothing - not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers - nothing is better.
But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there without a book, magazine, newspaper, profit and loss sheet or rating book to distract you - and keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off.
I can assure you that you will observe a vast wasteland."
- Newton Minow, chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), speaking at the 1961 meeting of the National
Association of Broadcasters.
Postcards from the Grove
An earlier time is recalled in this sampling of Forest Grove postcards, featuring campus scenes and handwritten comments from the early 1900's. Many of the buildings have changed or been moved and the postcards have largely been replaced by e-mails. But the beauty of the campus remains, as does the longing for connection to friends both near and far.
