Bobbi Nickels ’70, former director of Pacific’s Upward Bound program, has raised $25,000 for an endowed scholarship for low-income Pacific students, in honor of her former students. Many small donations, including all of the custodial staff, helped build the fund, which is still accepting donations. Nickels hopes to see the first annual scholarship awarded this fall.

Felicity Shoulders ’08 has been nominated to receive the 2010 Nebula Award for Short Stories. Her story, “Conditional Love” is one of seven finalists chosen by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Shoulders will be traveling to Washington, D.C. for the awards ceremony in May.

Reese Moriyama ’10 has won a national award from the University and College Designers Association (UCDA) for a series of photographs of Pacific athletes Moriyama shot in 2010. Only 196 Excellence Awards were given from nearly 1,300 entries in the 40th Annual UCDA Competition. His winning entry was on display at the annual UCDA Design Conference in October in Minneapolis. Megan Beattie

Megan Beattie graduated in May 2013 from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix with a master’s degree in special education. She is a high school special education resource teacher in the Ketchikan (Alaska) Gateway Borough School District.

Kurtis Childers received a doctorate of medicine degree from Pacific Northwest University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013. He is working on his five-year general surgery residency at Pinnacle Health Systems in Harrisburg, Penn., where he lives with his wife Aubrey and two children, Kael and Lillian.

Frankie Guros earned a master of science degree in psychology from Portland State University in August 2013. 

Kelsey Owens

Kelsey Owens, a former All-American runner at Pacific, was the featured speaker at the national 2013 NCAA Division II cross- country awards banquet in Spokane, Wash., in November 2013. She spoke about her efforts to help underprivileged children in Uganda through a physical education program focused on introducing Ugandan children to healthy workout habits and providing education regarding fitness.

Ashley Schalow married Perry Kent ’10 on Sept. 22, 2013, in Seattle aboard a Washington State Ferry vessel. Michelle Lawrence ’10 and Jaeme Klever ’10 were attendants.
