Chad Toomey 1994

Chad Toomey ’94 has accepted a firefighter position with the Forest Grove Fire Department. Toomey has worked at the Pacific University Outback since 1997 and also served as a volunteer firefighter. “It is such a privilege to be accepted into this fine staff of professionals,” he said. “At the same time, I will be saying farewell to a wonderfully supportive organization — Pacific University. These are exciting times!”

Paul Berman 1975

Paul Berman O.D. ’75 was honored at the White House on Oct. 2, 2012, for his work as founder and global clinical adviser of the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program, in which volunteers provide vision tests, as well as protective sports goggles and prescription eyeglasses as needed, to all Special Olympics participants. Dr. Berman developed the program in 1991, during his term as president of the AOA Sports Vision Section, and the Lions Clubs International Foundation assumed sponsorship in 2001. A widely recognized sports vision practitioner, Berman has a practice in Hackensack, N.J., and has received many professional recognitions for his work.

Lynn (Fishman) Hellerstein ’74, OD ’77

Lynn (Fishman) Hellerstein ’74, OD ’77 is owner of Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, which was voted in the Top 5 in the vision category in Colorado Parent magazine’s annual “Family Favorites” edition.

Robert Hersman ’74, OD ’75

Robert Hersman ’74, OD ’75 and Aaron Mjelstad ’98, OD ’00 regularly treat football and baseball players from the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins pro teams in their practice, Hopkins Eye Clinic, in Hopkins, Minn. Former Pacific University optometry faculty member Al Reichow ’78, OD ’81, MAEd ’95 was instrumental in helping secure the arrangement between the clinic and the professional athletes. Reichow’s father, Jerry Reichow, was a former Vikings player.

Oliver Gruter

Oliver Gruter won six gold medals in swimming events in the 34th annual Nevada Senior Games in Las Vegas this fall. 

Sandy Young ’82, OD ‘84

Sandy Young ’82, OD ’84 has published a book, Visionary Kitchen: A Cookbook for Eye Health. The book includes more than 150 recipes with photos, a chapter on important eye nutrients, food charts, and how to maximize nutrient retention during cooking. 

David Wolf OD

David Wolf OD was named the 2013 Optometric Physician of the Year by the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association in recognition of his service to the optometric profession and his community. He is the owner of Lake Oswego Vision Clinic in Lake Oswego, Ore.

Hanna Vaandering

Hanna Vaandering is featured in an article in the October 2013 edition of Today’s OEA, a publication of the Oregon Education Association. Vaandering is president. 

Ken Kondo

Ken Kondo captured five medals in August at the 2013 State Games of America, a biennial Olympic-style competition. Kondo won a gold as a member of the 200-yard freestyle mixed relay, silvers in the 50-yard backstroke, 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard breaststroke, and a bronze in the 50-yard butterfly. Kondo competed in the State Games of California prior to attending the national meet. He owned seven school records while a member of the Boxer men’s swimming team from 1985 to 1988.
