Chad Toomey 1994

Chad Toomey ’94 has accepted a firefighter position with the Forest Grove Fire Department. Toomey has worked at the Pacific University Outback since 1997 and also served as a volunteer firefighter. “It is such a privilege to be accepted into this fine staff of professionals,” he said. “At the same time, I will be saying farewell to a wonderfully supportive organization — Pacific University. These are exciting times!”

Paul Berman 1975

Paul Berman O.D. ’75 was honored at the White House on Oct. 2, 2012, for his work as founder and global clinical adviser of the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program, in which volunteers provide vision tests, as well as protective sports goggles and prescription eyeglasses as needed, to all Special Olympics participants. Dr. Berman developed the program in 1991, during his term as president of the AOA Sports Vision Section, and the Lions Clubs International Foundation assumed sponsorship in 2001. A widely recognized sports vision practitioner, Berman has a practice in Hackensack, N.J., and has received many professional recognitions for his work.

Gordon Woods ’74, OD ’75 is now retired in Jacksonville, Fla.

 

Max Miura

Max Miura

Max Miura retired from the Department of Education of Hawai’i in June 2012 after more than 33 years teaching. He wrestled for Pacific University from 1975 to 1977 and still officiates high school wrestling in Hawai’i and occasionally in Oregon. 

 

Carol (Pritchett) Riggs

Carol (Pritchett) Riggs has signed a contract with Strange Chemistry/Angry Robot Books for her debut sci-fi novel, The Body Institute, to release in January 2015. It explores society, body image and identity and involves a teen whose mind is downloaded into overweight clients to help them lose weight.

 

Frank Giardina

Frank Giardina ’83, OD ’86 is the optometric director at Community Health Centers of the Central Coast, Inc. He also is an adjunct professor of optometry at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif., and his clinic serves as an externship site. He was appointed to the California State Board of Optometry by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2013.

 

Terry J. “TJ” Lantz

Terry J. “TJ” Lantz OD, a colonel in the U.S. Army, is relocating to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he will be stationed in the Office of the Chief, Medical Service Corps. He has served 25 years in the Army in postings including Korea, Germany and several bases in the U.S. He is assistant corps chief for clinical sciences for the Medical Service Corps, chief of Army optometry and consultant to the Surgeon General. 

 

Shaun Hearn

Shaun Hearn earned a master’s degree in library and information science at Drexel University.

 

Deb Park

Deb Park is a learning strategist at Medicine Hat College in Alberta, Canada, and is a doctoral candidate in education at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore.
