Chad Toomey ’94 has accepted a firefighter position with the Forest Grove Fire Department. Toomey has worked at the Pacific University Outback since 1997 and also served as a volunteer firefighter. “It is such a privilege to be accepted into this fine staff of professionals,” he said. “At the same time, I will be saying farewell to a wonderfully supportive organization — Pacific University. These are exciting times!”
Paul Berman O.D. ’75 was honored at the White House on Oct. 2, 2012, for his work as founder and global clinical adviser of the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program, in which volunteers provide vision tests, as well as protective sports goggles and prescription eyeglasses as needed, to all Special Olympics participants. Dr. Berman developed the program in 1991, during his term as president of the AOA Sports Vision Section, and the Lions Clubs International Foundation assumed sponsorship in 2001. A widely recognized sports vision practitioner, Berman has a practice in Hackensack, N.J., and has received many professional recognitions for his work.
Emily Lux MAT was the featured artist in December at Summa Real Estate Group in Hillsboro, Ore. She is a muralist, painter and maker of books, as well as a teacher in special education.

Travis Stine, Alex Taimanao ’10, J. Jury ’12 and Dane Lum Ho ’14 are four of the seven members of DK Band, which won “Yahoo!-A-Palooza,” a national YouTube battle of the bands video contest. DK Band, which rehearses twice a week in an industrial building in Portland, also was the opening act for the December 2013 Yahoo! Year-End Party.
Sarah Swanholm OD has joined the eye-care team at Bagan Strinden Vision in Fargo, N.D. After graduating from Pacific, she completed a hospital-based rehabilitative optometric residency at the Kansa City (Mo.) Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
