Carrie Newman 1988

Carrie Newman ’88 is executive director of the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra. Since graduating from Pacific, she has served in the Peace Corps in central Africa, earned a graduate degree in health policy from the University of Chicago and spent more than 15 years in health administration. Read more in the Editor's Blog.

David Cook OD '78

David Cook OD 1978

David Cook OD ’78 has published a new novel, The Anatomy of Blindness. Calling it a spiritual adventure story, Cook says the novel is about a behavioral optometrist who joins a consulting group that is, in fact, a front for an alternative religious group. The novel, he says, offers a new way of seeing the world. Cook owns Cook Vision Therapy Center in Marietta, Ga., and is a member of several national and international optometric organizations. He lectures throughout the United States, most recently at the Northwest Congress of Optometry, which met Feb. 22-23 at Pacific University. Read more in the Editor's Blog.

Max Miura

Max Miura

Max Miura retired from the Department of Education of Hawai’i in June 2012 after more than 33 years teaching. He wrestled for Pacific University from 1975 to 1977 and still officiates high school wrestling in Hawai’i and occasionally in Oregon. 

 

Carol (Pritchett) Riggs

Carol (Pritchett) Riggs has signed a contract with Strange Chemistry/Angry Robot Books for her debut sci-fi novel, The Body Institute, to release in January 2015. It explores society, body image and identity and involves a teen whose mind is downloaded into overweight clients to help them lose weight.

 

Frank Giardina

Frank Giardina ’83, OD ’86 is the optometric director at Community Health Centers of the Central Coast, Inc. He also is an adjunct professor of optometry at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif., and his clinic serves as an externship site. He was appointed to the California State Board of Optometry by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2013.

 

Terry J. “TJ” Lantz

Terry J. “TJ” Lantz OD, a colonel in the U.S. Army, is relocating to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he will be stationed in the Office of the Chief, Medical Service Corps. He has served 25 years in the Army in postings including Korea, Germany and several bases in the U.S. He is assistant corps chief for clinical sciences for the Medical Service Corps, chief of Army optometry and consultant to the Surgeon General. 

 

Shaun Hearn

Shaun Hearn earned a master’s degree in library and information science at Drexel University.

 

Deb Park

Deb Park is a learning strategist at Medicine Hat College in Alberta, Canada, and is a doctoral candidate in education at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore.
