Pacific University Director of Bands Michael Burch-Pesses has been invited to guest conduct the United States Navy Band when it performs at Willamette University in Salem later this month.

Burch-Pesses is well qualified for the job. His distinguished 33-year career in the navy includes serving as former executive officer of the Navy Band, head of the Navy music program and teacher at the U.S. Navy Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Now retired from the military, Burch-Pesses teaches music at Pacific, where he helped significantly grow participation in student music ensembles.

At the invitation of Commander of the Navy Band, Capt. Brian Walden, Burch-Pesses will don his dress uniform (“Still fits,” he boasts) and lead the band in Bridge of the Gods, by American composer James Curnow.

The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Willamette University in Salem. Admission is free, but tickets are required. To get a ticket, visit Willamette’s music office between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday or show up to the show as early as 6:30 p.m. to get tickets at the door.

The Spring 2013 issue of Pacific magazine also will feature other veterans and military members connected to the Pacific University family. Read about students and alumni who serve or have served our country in the new issue, coming this April.
